3 Winter Pests To Watch Out For And How To Handle Them

Many people think of pests as a summer nuisance. Since insects are cold-blooded, they are most active when the temperatures favor them during the summer months. Very few species are dynamic in the winter, but this does not mean your home will be pest-free during the colder months of the year. Most pests will do their best to move indoors during the cold winter months because they want to survive the cold. Here are four common winter pests in the home and how pest control services can help eliminate them.

Ants

These are common in the winter, and they access the home through cracks, holes, and other minor openings. Ants typically live in colonies, and if you see a few idling around the house, there are many others around. They will rummage your kitchen in search of food and bring others back when they find it. To get rid of ants, you have to eliminate all food sources in the home. Clean up the kitchen thoroughly and ensure you cover dustbins and other places where they could access crumbs. You can also use an ant bait with home repellents like vinegar and water. If the infestation is significant, call an exterminator to help you remove the vermin.

Cockroaches

The biggest challenge with cockroaches is the rate at which they multiply. You might ignore a few cockroaches that you see crawling around your home and wind up with a full-blown infestation. Like ants, cockroaches thrive where they can access food. You can minimize infestations by keeping the house clean at all times. If you already have an infestation, consider using a mixture of boric acid, flour, and sugar to set a trap. Roaches die once they eat the boric acid in the concoction.

Ticks

Not many people think about ticks as a pest that could affect them. However, they are common, especially in the winter when pets like dogs spend most of the day indoors. Ticks are a health hazard because their bites lead to serious health issues like Lyme disease. You can use pesticides and insecticides to spray different parts of the house and get rid of ticks. You can also protect your pets from attracting them by having them injected.

Getting rid of pests in the winter might seem challenging than the other months. However, it might work with the proper preventive measures. If an infestation appears to be getting out of hand, call professional pest control services to handle it for you.
